International Space Station Video System Upgrade Leverages Multicore SBC Technology from Trenton Systems
The upcoming Microgravity Sciences Glovebox (MSG) Video Upgrade Equipment (VUE) from Teledyne Brown Engineering uses the TSB7053 single board computer and BPG7087 backplane from Trenton Systems, providing embedded multicore Intel processor technology incorporated into a PICMG 1.3 single board computer (SBC) architecture.
The new VUE is a digital upgrade that removes the need for tapes and the associated problems with transporting the physical media between Earth and the station. The upgrade to digital data means transmission to the ground can be made by telemetry networks, allowing to the ground science teams to access the data much more quickly, and start their analysis within days of any MSG experiment, rather than the multi-month wait time typical with the current analog tape system.

| MSG-VUE Video Drawer Front Panel |
There are a number of reasons that Teledyne Brown Engineering of Huntsville, AL choose to integrate a Trenton Systems long-life SBC and PCI Express backplane into the MSG VUE video drawer for controlling key elements of the microgravity test chamber:
- Longevity: Computer equipment deployed on the ISS must remain operational as long as possible
- Flexibility: The ability to support different types of PCI Express plug-in cards is extremely important
- Scalability: The ability to quickly add custom or standard COTS plug-in cards is a distinct advantage
- Bandwidth: PCI Express bandwidth and data throughput capabilities are critical in the MSG VUE

Trenton and Matrox Provide AV Hardware for Australian Grand Prix
The Australian Grand Prix Corporation needed a high performance system to monitor all the camera feeds and logistical information from around the track. It was a big task, so they enlisted the help of P.A People to provide a perfect solution.
That solution came in the shape of a TVC4401 video wall controller system from Trenton Systems. The system was powered by three Matrox Mura MPX-4/4 boards, each featuring four outputs and four inputs, and two MPX-V16s, which capture up to 16 NTSC/PAL/SECAM video channels each. During the race the Mura cards captured feeds from 10 inputs including lap times, race position, etc, and 32 track cameras, managing their display across 12 Samsung 460UX monitors in a 6x2 configuration.
The P.A. People Managing Director Chris Dodds said, “The Mura platform provided an upgrade path between an analog and IP solution, without resorting to a very expensive turnkey solution. By using a Matrox certified chassis solution, the Trenton TVC4401 worked pretty much out of the box”.
The race was won by McLaren driver Jenson Button, with Sebastian Vettel in second place, and former teammate Lewis Hamilton coming in third. The Trenton TVC4401 and Mura MPX Series video wall controller boards captured and displayed Button’s victory from start to finish in the control room, meeting the Australian Grand Prix Corporation’s strict audio-visual needs and budget.
The Australian Grand Prix Corporation was so pleased that they asked The P.A. People to return to the 2013 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix. And they all lived happily ever after....
You can check out the TVC4401 in this video from Trenton Systems.

High Reliability and Quality as Standard....
All the products available from our principals are designed from the ground up for high reliability, and manufactured and tested to the highest quality standards.
With every piece of hardware warrantied for at least 1 year, you can rest assured that the risk of your boards or system malfunctioning is extremely low.*
*Obviously if you drop it, sit on it, or allow it to fall down the loo (it happens) then the warranty is void.

Embedded Enviro-Tech - the way forward?
Huge advances have been made in the technology we use for environmental monitoring, in particular the electronic devices used to monitor, control and conserve the natural environment and resources, and to curb the negative impacts of human involvement.
When it comes to harnessing renewable energy, increased operating efficiency is achieved when embedded computing platforms are tasked with monitoring and controlling assets such as wind turbines, solar panels and transmission grids.
Trenton Systems Inc supports Smart Grid applications with its range of embedded motherboards, SBCs and backplanes.
Mark Lovett of Trenton Systems has written a White Paper titled 'Embedded Computing Enables Smart Grid Technology'.

Trenton Technology - PCI Express 1.1, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0 – What’s Happening & Why Do I Care?

It’s pretty clear to me that given the number of PCI Express plug-in cards available on the market today that PCI Express has won the high-bandwidth, serial interconnect wars of a few years ago. No doubt, there are specific application niches were InfiniBand, RapidIO or HyperTransport work the best. However, given the ever-expanding volume and types of PCI Express COTS boards available, you have to admit that PCI Express is the clear victor. Maybe you disagree, but next time you’re searching on-line or in your local Fry’s for a plug-in board let me know how many non-PCI Express high-bandwidth, serial interconnect boards you manage to find. I’m guessing that the number will be very small. Read more...
