Cyber Security Technology - Who, Where, Why, When and How in the Southwest!

WHO is CyNam?

CyNam is a non-profit networking organisation for the UK's cyber security and technology
community in the South West of England.

WHERE are they based?

Up until quite recently, cyber hubs and technology investment groups have focused their activity around Bristol, Birmingham and Oxford, but Cheltenham has calibre for cyber technology, particularly within the areas of big data analysis and information security initiatives.

WHY was CyNam created?

The goal of CyNam, which launched in 2016, is to bring together industry innovators from local SME’s and start-ups to make full use of the strong cyber security community around Cheltenham.

WHEN can I get involved?

CyNam hosts regular cyber events once a quarter and they are attended by senior business leaders in the cyber field as well as young start-ups and entrepreneurs. Nigel Norman, MD - Sarsen Technology has attended some of these events and found them incredibly useful for networking as well as discussing new technology and developments in the cyber arena with other interested parties.

CyNam has been shortlisted for the 2019 Cyber Security Awards, as 'Not for Profit Team of the Year’. The awards are on 4th July and we wish CyNam the best of luck in their category!

HOW do we support Cyber Security at Sarsen?

Sarsen Technology supports a wide variety of cyber security, intelligence, surveillance and secure communications projects across the UK. The applications we support must accommodate the strictest security measures as well as aggressive data bandwidths, and in most cases must reduce size, weight, and power (SWaP).

We work with some of the best manufacturers in the world to supply a select range of unique products including 19” rackmount systems and FPGA based hardware. The latest addition to our product line is REFLEX CES, whose designs and solutions for both evaluation and prototyping, are built using the latest FPGA technology solutions based on Intel FPGA or Xilinx FPGA, modified COTS, or full turnkey designs.

Zero Packet Loss Processing for Government Security Applications

Government market sectors like cyber security, intelligence, surveillance and secure communications have become increasingly important in recent times. They also come with a unique set of challenges when it comes to protection from criminal activity taking place across the internet.

These types of applications have to support the strictest security measures as well as aggressive data bandwidths. We work with Netcope Technologies to provide programmable hardware accelerators that guarantee wire-speed traffic processing with zero packet loss on 100G, 40G and 10G Ethernet.

In combination with ready-to-use firmware, these accelerators provide both per-packet and stateful filtering, which is a basic element of lawful interception and data retention systems.

Together with support for multiple network technologies(100G, 40G, 10G and 25G Ethernet), this protects future investments when moving to higher speeds. Specifically, Netcope Session Filter (NSF) implements smart pre-processing of network traffic, based on keeping track of network flows directly in hardware.

NSF surpasses competing solutions due to its ability to dynamically adjust the level of traffic details transferred to software. Smart cooperation between intelligent software and powerful hardware allows implementation of reliable interception systems for the highest-speed networks, which is not possible with conventional solutions.

For more information about how Netcope and Sarsen can support your Law Enforcement, Cyber Security or Intelligence applications please get in touch - info@sarsen.net

1553 Tutorial - Alta Data Technologies

Alta Data Technologies LLC (Alta) is a company dedicated to providing the best possible MIL-STD-1553 and ARINC-429/717 COTS communications products and service in the Aerospace Industry.

Find out more - Alta Data

Alta has designed a full line of PCI, PCI Express (PCIe) interface cards for almost any computer backplane. They also supply their own innovative real-time Ethernet connectivity devices.

Alta is the only COTS supplier to test 1553 card designs to SAE AS4111 Protocol Validation Tests, and they manufacture their products to the highest IPC-610 Class 3 standards using processes managed by an ISO9001 quality management system. All of this is backed up by their 5 year limited warranty – one of the best in the industry. Alta is fully supported in the UK by Sarsen Technology.

MIL-STD-1553

MIL-STD-1553 has had a long, popular life – and will continue to be supported for decades to come in new and legacy applications. Alta engineers and managers have been in the avionics industry since the early 1980’s and have worked on nearly every major avionics program.

They have put together a MIL-STD-1553 tutorial, designed to complement the referenced MIL HDBK 1553A Notice II (3572 downloads) document, which provides an excellent detailed review of the 1553 standard (MIL-HDBK-1553A Section 20 provides a summary of MIL-STD-1553B Notice 2).  Commercially available chip-sets and interface cards (like Alta’s) “off load” the protocol processing (protocol engine) so the engineer’s primary concern is design/integration of application software and cabling issues.

You can download the tutorial by clicking here. If you have any questions please get in touch with the Sarsen team - info@sarsen.net

We always have a themed Boxing Day with our extended family.  Every year we dress up, decorate, play music and eat a menu based around a chosen country.  In recent years we have been to Mexico, Cuba, Italy, Sweden (even hired a hot tub for that one!), and Hawaii (musically challenging). This year we are off to Greece for the day – looking forward to Calamari, Sea Bass, veggie Moussaka, and Greek Salad with plenty of Feta cheese of course!

3. A Christmassy family tradition in your house.
When we were kids we'd all open our stockings sat at the foot of Mum and Dad's bed. Now I do the same but with our cats. Yes, they have stockings too.
4. Favourite Christmas song/carol.
All Alone on Christmas by Darlene Love. And it's not Christmas until 'The Buble' has been on at least 15 times.
5. What makes you feel festive?
Twinkly lights and cinnamon.

Sarsen Technology Christmas Bake Off - The Results!

Once again the Sarsen Technology team has been putting their artistic and creative skills to the test, this time with the Christmas staple, the chocolate Yule Log. Baking experience varies throughout the team, but everyone had a go and the results were quite spectacular.

We asked our friends at Sema4 to judge, and they assured us they were well versed in extreme cake eating, which was great news as there were 5 completely different offerings to taste.

Christos - Chocolate salami with cognac and dark chocolate
Lynn - Chocolate log with peppermint cream and gingerbread figures
Laura - Chocolate log with spiced rum and ginger buttercream
Nigel - Chocolate log with glace fruits and chocolate ganache icing
Angela - Well, we'll come to Angela later.

L-R: Lynn, Christos, Nigel & Laura (bottom)

Judged by James and Tony from Sema4, (or Mary and Paul as we like to call them) who took their roles very seriously, there were 3 awards to be won. Master of Flavours, for the person who made the most delicious cake, Expert Cake Decorator, for they who made their log look the most beautiful, and the Overall Winner, given to the person who combined both good looks and taste.

Our expert judges - Tony and James from Sema4
There was some debate between the judges about which log deserved the Master of Flavours accolade, it was a close call for Laura's boozy spiced rum filling but in the end Christos was victorious, with his traditional Greek Mosaiko, or chocolate salami. Filled with delicious biscuits and twice as much cognac as the recipe demanded, Christos knew he was on to a winner before the judging even started.

Lynn's beautifully decorated log, complete with holly and gingerbread animals took the Expert Cake Decorator award. The time and effort put into the finished cake was clear to see and the prize was well deserved.

Considering Nigel has never really baked before, his log was really tasty, even if Tony thought the icing looked like it was moving!!

Now, the Overall Winner was initially awarded to Angela, based on how beautifully put together and delicious her chocolate log was. I'm sure you'd agree, it would normally be a very worthy winner.

Angela's beautiful cake!

Then the bombshell was dropped that the cake we'd been admiring was actually bought whole, from a shop. Not lovingly baked and decorated by hand as everyone else's was. You can imagine our horror when this was revealed, and so unfortunately the whole thing had to be disqualified. In Angela's defence she did blame her daughter for putting the idea in her head and she was very busy so it's not entirely her fault.

This left the door open for Laura to swoop in and take the Overall Winner title, with the cake that was actually James' favourite from the beginning.

Thank you very much to James and Tony for their expertise today, and for (almost) everyone for putting in such a wonderful effort.

Merry Christmas to all!

A Walk Down Christmas Memory Lane...

There are only 13 sleeps to Santa, and here at Sarsen we do like to celebrate Christmas. This year we have a beautiful tree from Val and the lovely elves at Nature at Work, and Angela has planned a cracker (get it!?) of a Christmas do.

We've done a lot of different things over the last 17 years, from fancy dress parties to burlesque nights, extraordinary gastronomic experiences to cosy pub lunches. There are always plenty of photos/evidence to remember them by and there's normally a silly hat or two involved!

This year we are taking a trip to Salisbury Plain to see the Great Bustards, which have been reintroduced back into the wild thanks to the hard work of The Great Bustard Group.

We'll be ready for a good feed after spending time in the bird hide, so we're stopping off for a festive feast at The Red Lion in East Chisenbury where all the Secret Santa fun and games will commence!

If you have any photos of your Christmas parties we'd love to see them! Ours will be posted here next Friday for your festive viewing pleasure :)

Best wishes to all friends and colleagues, old and new (especially to those who managed to avoid being in any photos!!).
Thanks for the memories!
Team Sarsen

Intel Releases Xeon D Processor Family

Intel has just unveiled a new range of Xeon brand processors. The new processor family, known as Xeon D, are a series of system-on-chip server processors designed specifically for blade and high density server systems.

Intel rarely announce new integrated platforms, and the Xeon D has caused a bit of excitement in the industry. Hailed as the previously unoccupied middle ground between Xeon E3 and Atom SoCs, the Xeon D takes the best bits of both and slots neatly into the market for the low-end server market, prioritising efficiency and networking.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Xeon D, also known as Broadwell-DE, combines up to eight high performance Broadwell desktop cores and the PCH onto a single die, reducing both down to 14 nm for power consumption/die area. Dual integrated 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports natively support XAUI/KX4/KR to further enhance I/O capabilities, while reducing SWaP-C concerns. 24 PCI Express (PCIe) 3.0 lanes, eight PCIe 2.0 lanes, six SATA 6 Gb/s ports, four USB 3.0 ports, and four USB 2.0 ports provide many options for system expansion, connectivity, and storage. In addition to multiple 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports, the Xeon® D employs a Non-Transparent Bridge for PCIe to enable advanced connectivity options for multiprocessor systems.

Alongside the announcement from Intel, Extreme Engineering Solutions, Inc. (X-ES) has introduced the XPedite7670 3U OpenVPX™ REDI single board computer module and its 6U VPX companion, the XCalibur4640, both based on the Intel® Xeon® D (formerly Broadwell-DE) processor family.

The XPedite7670 is a high-performance, 3U OpenVPX™ REDI, single board computer with support for up to 8 GB of DDR3-1600 ECC SDRAM. The XCalibur4640 extends the XPedite7670's functionality to a 6U VPX form factor with expanded capabilities. System memory capacity increases to 16 GB of DDR3-1600 ECC SDRAM and local storage increases to 128 GB of SLC NAND flash.

Hello and Goodbye - A new Sales Engineer for Sarsen Technology

Author - Laura Biddiscombe

Today is a sad day.

We are saying “adiós y buena suerte” to Alberto, who is leaving us for a new life in California with his wife, Cristina.

We’ve all really enjoyed working with Alberto (who, even after all this time, hasn’t succumbed to a nickname), and the team is sad to see him go. I will particularly miss having to explain who’s who in any British TV program since time began.

Alberto bought culture to the Sarsen office, as well as an abundance of enthusiasm and generosity, especially when it comes to turrón and polvorónes. We will miss you!!

But all is not lost.
As one door closes another one opens. We’d like to welcome Tony Seal to the Sarsen gang. Tony is taking over from Alberto, and will be providing engineering and technical support, primarily for United Electronics Industries solutions, to key accounts in the military, instrumentation, transportation and aerospace sectors.

Good luck to both Tony and Alberto as they start their new adventures. I’m not sure who needs it most….!

Sarsen Introduces Impulse Accelerated Technologies to the Product Line

Author - Laura

We are very excited to annouce that Impulse Accelerated Technologies has appointed Sarsen Technology Ltd as its FPGA Tools and Design Services distributor in the UK and Ireland.

Founded in 2002, Impulse Accelerated Technologies is a Washington State based company who specialise in high performance and high reliability solutions which accelerate compute bound software modules by offloading them to FPGA. Having been in the business for over a decade Impulse offers sophisticated tools that work with Altera FPGA-based boards from BittWare, as well as Xilinx-based FPGA modules from Extreme Engineering and DAVE Embedded Systems (and other well known manufacturers!)

About Impulse C

Impulse C is one of the most widely used software to FPGA hardware optimizing compilers. It has been used in over 2,000 designs by clients as diverse as NASA, Sony and Wall Street Banks. Impulse CoDeveloper is compatible with > 90% of FPGAs, and available processor cores. Impulse CoDeveloper also produces synthesizable VHDL or Verilog compatible with many other tools.

Impulse C enables developers to rapidly prototype offloading CPU bound applications by moving them to multiple streaming processes running in FPGA hardware and software.

C and VHDL can be combined in heterogeneous programming. Impulse C even outputs IEEE compliant VHDL to simulators from Mentor and Aldec.

Impulse also offers board interface packages which link to memory, I/O, processors and other hardware features from C.

The new relationship is going to allow us to support customers with complete FPGA-based solutions in the financial trading, telecommunications infrastructure, power generation and Mil/Aero markets, providing not only hardware and software, but also training and support going forward.

Impulse has helped over 500 teams improve their application by refactoring and recompiling it to run faster, smaller or at lower power. For more information about the new relationship and how it could benefit your FPGA-based application please contact Sarsen Technology on +44 1672 511166, or email us - info@sarsen.net
