Swindon FPGA Meetup - 18th July 2017

Swindon FPGA Meetup Group

The aim of the Swindon FPGA Meetup is to provide a forum where people based in the Swindon area who have an active interest in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology can get together to discuss industry developments in hardware & software tools, verification, architectures, simulation, verification and test.

We aim to connect local Engineers and Technologists who are working in the electronics industry and using FPGAs in their projects and applications. Rather than selling solutions, we want to share our industry knowledge and experience to further our collective technical expertise.

The first meetup is scheduled for Tuesday, July 18th at The Plough on the Hill near Swindon, and the organisers will provide food and a beer.

If there are any topics you would like to discuss please join the Swindon FPGA Group on Meetup.

FINTECH Altera FPGA Solutions

High performance computing using FPGA technology is a key technology for the financial services industry. High frequency automated financial trading uses models and simulations to provide real-time assistance in decision making.

BittWare’s ultra-low latency hardware is based on Altera’s industry leading Arria 10, Stratix V, and Arria V FPGAs and provides CPU offload along with the highest performance transceivers. These boards are a robust solution for Financial Acceleration applications, providing the ultimate in low latency with up to 100GigE straight to the FPGA (no external PHY) and optional TCP/IP offload engine.

As well as offering high performance FPGA hardware for financial trading Sarsen can call on the expertise of a number of consultants who specialise in software and hardware integration, allowing us to provide a complete solution for your low latency and high speed financial trading requirements.

One of the companies we work with is PA Consulting, which has just introduced hardware accelerator solutions specifically for low latency networks. The Hardware Accelerator identifies bottlenecks in your current infrastructure, and highlights where improvements to transaction speed and volume can be made, for example by speeding up algorithms or by removing shared interfaces such as Ethernet/IP connections.

Contact us to find out more about the range of FPGA solutions we can offer for the Fintech market space - info@sarsen.net or 01672 511166.

Training on a Friday afternoon....

Every so often at Camp Sarsen, we decide it’s time to refresh our knowledge and tap into our manufacturer’s vast resources with a little bit of training.

This week UEI are sharing their secrets about the UEISIM. It's a great bit of kit, and it's one that has seen growing interest over the last few months. So we decided to swot up to make sure we're ready to answer all your questions about the hardware and how it works.

The UEISIM is available on PPC Cube, GigE Cube and RACKtangle platforms

In basic terms, the UEISIM turns a PowerDNx Ethernet data acquisition module into a target on which you can run Simulink models and read/write physical I/O. It offers Simulink users a flexible I/O target for real time applications like simulation model verification, rapid prototyping, and hardware-in-the-loop testing. You can use it to experiment with control system design, signal processing, data acquisition and similar tasks directly from the Simulink environment, without the need to use any additional tools.

We will be delving into UEISIM nitty-gritty this afternoon, looking at the software, I/O capabilities, deployment scenarios, ruggedisation, chassis design and connectivity ports and interfaces.

If our brains are still intact after all then give us a call to:
a) test us, or
b) discuss your Simulink application!

Sarsen Gearing Up for UEI Visit Next Week!

On a scale from 1 to Rebecca Black, how excited are you that it's Friday??

We are especially excited, as we have Rick Van Nostrand from United Electronic Industries over next week and we're taking him to see some of our most interesting customers.

UEI is a versatile product line, with application possibilities ranging from automotive testing to power plant monitoring, all the way through to ULV control and vehicle simulators. This means we get to speak to a wide variety of companies, and get involved in some truly diverse projects!

With some brand new opportunities to discuss, and new people to meet, next week is going to be a busy one. If you have an application that you think would benefit from learning a little more about the UEI range of data acquisition and logging products please give us a call on +44 1672 511166, or drop us an email.

Have a great weekend!

Data Acquisition and Temperature Monitoring with United Electronic Industries

United Electronic Industries (UEI) is a leading provider of PC based I/O products, including Ethernet data acquisition and embedded/industrial control interfaces, Data Loggers/Recorders and Linux based Embedded Controllers (PACs).
UEI supply products to many different markets, with a focus on simulation, industrial, aerospace, and laboratory data acquisition and control applications.
If you're not sure whether UEI has the right product to solve your problem you should check out the application stories on their website; you may be surprised how many different uses there are for the UEI hardware...

High Channel Count Temperature Monitoring
A major appliance manufacturer automated temperature measurement in a CSA oven test stand. Though conceptually a simple application, the system requires monitoring over 1700 thermocouples. The previous solution involved four technicians monitoring a bank of digital panel meters and making manual entries into a test log.
This inefficient, error-prone method was replaced by 18 PowerDNA DNA-PPC8 Cubes populated with DNA-AI-207 analog input boards.

DNA-AI-207 analog input board

The Cubes are distributed around the test chamber, minimizing the length of thermocouple wire required. The built-in single port Ethernet switch provided in the PowerDNA Cube allows the Ethernet to be daisy chained from one cube to the next. The entire system is implemented using a single Ethernet port on the host computer.

Software for this system was written in C++ using the UEIDAQ Framework. The Framework provides a powerful, yet simple set of drivers that may be called from all popular programming languages and application packages (e.g., LabVIEW, MATLAB) and supports Windows/ Vista. UEI also provides a high level API to support Linux and most popular Real-Time operating systems including QNX, RTX, and VxWorks. The library adds simulated hardware that allows you to test-drive the software, (or start developing your application) without any DAQ hardware. The UEIDAQ library is included with all UEI DAQ hardware at no charge. It is available for download from the UEI website.

The PowerDNA® (Distributed Networked Automation) Cube and PowerDNR RACKtangles are compact, rugged, Ethernet-based data acquisition and control chassis. PowerDNA series chassis act as I/O slaves to a host computer. Programs/applications running on a host PC receive data from input (or I/O) boards within the chassis and write data to output channels. I/O boards may be installed in any combination, allowing the Cube/RACKtangle to be precisely matched to your system requirements. This configuration works well in both data acquisition and control applications.
Supporting LabVIEW, DASYLab and MATLAB, UEI is a great choice for your data acquisition and control requirements...

Tell us about your application - email laura.jeffs@sarsen.net or call the office on +44 1672 511166
