Application Note - TenAsys / INtime plus UEI / PowerDNA : The perfect match for Real Time Simulation

Author - Laura Biddiscombe

United Electronic Industries (UEI) has a vast library of Technical Articles, Application Notes and White Papers, including the widely read "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Data Acquisition and Embedded Control"; an overview of key DAQ concepts for both experienced engineers and those new to data acquisition.

The latest addition to the library is an application story which gives a great insight into how TenAsys/INtime and PowerDNA can work together in a Hardware in the Loop system.

Application Story - TenAsys/INtime plus UEI/PowerDNA: The perfect match for Real Time Simulation

"There are few Real Time operating systems which can implement the RT processor on one platform, and there are few Non Real Time Operating systems to implement the operator interface on another platform.

We will describe here a way to partition a single platform to do both. The software is called INtime for Windows and is produced by TenAsys Corporation.

There are also Various I/O options to connect to the RT system – many vendors, each with its special way of connecting to the RT system and different API “philosophy” to access the specific I/O.

We will describe here an I/O system that supplies all the needed interfaces to the Electronic Unit via one (Ethernet) connection to the RT system, and with a unified Driver “philosophy”. The I/O equipment is called PowerDNA , and is produced by UEI Corporation."

UEI makes it SIMple: An in-depth look at designing a Temperature Warning System using the UEISIM

Author: Laura Biddiscombe

We promised a new Technical Article... So here it is!

Our very own Alberto Bassett brings us his findings from his first look at designing a Temperature Warning System using the UEISIM from United Electronic Industries (UEI).

A Temperature Warning System is just one example among thousands of applications you can build with United Electronic Industries (UEI) Racks and I/O Layers. This example shows the simplicity you gain when using UEISIM combined with Simulink from MathWorks. The powerful Software Suite that comes with UEI products makes it possible.

UEISIM - Ideal Data Acquisition Platform for Simulink Users

UEISIM from United Electronic Industries is an ideal solution for Simulink users who need to test their simulations on real hardware. Models built in Simulink are deployed directly on the UEISIM using The Mathworks’ Real-Time Workshop.

MathWorks has recently announced Release 2013b (R2013b) of its MATLAB and Simulink product families. R2013b delivers new analysis, design, code generation and implementation and other features in MATLAB and Simulink, two new Polyspace products, as well as updates to 79 other products.

The UEISIM offers Simulink users a new, powerful and flexible I/O target. Models built in Simulink are deployed directly on the UEISIM using Real-Time Workshop. The combination creates a powerful new solution in the creation and tuning of many real-time and non-real-time applications. These include simulation model verification, rapid prototyping, and hardware-in-the-loop testing. The UEISIM is rugged, flexible and expandable enough that it is not only a great solution while in your development cycle, it’s also the ideal solution for your production hardware.

To use the UEISIM simply:
  • Build your Simulink application.
  • Open MATLAB, and select Simulink/Embedded target for UEISIM.
  • Convert your model to use the UEISIM I/O blocks (if you had not used them in your original model).
  • Create an executable via Simulink Coder.
  • Connect the UEISIM in "external mode" (if you wish to remotely monitor the application while running on the UEISIM).
  • Start your simulation. Six easy steps and your simulation is running live on real hardware.

Whether your application requires a few I/O channels or a few thousand, the UEISIM is an ideal solution. The Cube’s unique combination of clean and simple Simulink/Simulink Coder target compatible Linux operating system, I/O flexibility, compact size, mechanical and electrical ruggedness and ease of use is unparalleled.

Training on a Friday afternoon....

Every so often at Camp Sarsen, we decide it’s time to refresh our knowledge and tap into our manufacturer’s vast resources with a little bit of training.

This week UEI are sharing their secrets about the UEISIM. It's a great bit of kit, and it's one that has seen growing interest over the last few months. So we decided to swot up to make sure we're ready to answer all your questions about the hardware and how it works.

The UEISIM is available on PPC Cube, GigE Cube and RACKtangle platforms

In basic terms, the UEISIM turns a PowerDNx Ethernet data acquisition module into a target on which you can run Simulink models and read/write physical I/O. It offers Simulink users a flexible I/O target for real time applications like simulation model verification, rapid prototyping, and hardware-in-the-loop testing. You can use it to experiment with control system design, signal processing, data acquisition and similar tasks directly from the Simulink environment, without the need to use any additional tools.

We will be delving into UEISIM nitty-gritty this afternoon, looking at the software, I/O capabilities, deployment scenarios, ruggedisation, chassis design and connectivity ports and interfaces.

If our brains are still intact after all then give us a call to:
a) test us, or
b) discuss your Simulink application!
