What is an Embedded Processing Unit (EPU) ?
Embedded Processing Unit
Definition - Fully assembled and tested x86 embedded computer based on COM Express form factor.
The EPU concept is based on the flexibility of a 2-board set forming a complete embedded computer product. When you combine two completely separate CPU and I/O modules, tightly sandwiched together, the final product provide a huge range of advantages and a much smaller footprint than equivalent single board computers.
VersaLogic's family of rugged EPU products are designed around the COM Express form factor, and are delivered as fully assembled and tested units (including heat plate).
What's Inside
EPUs offer a long list of advantages over other embedded computer board products, including:
- Fast time-to-market
- Smaller footprint
- -40° to +85°C operation
- Fully tested
- Available off-the-shelf!
There is also often the added complication of designing a custom carrier card for COM Express modules. EPUs eliminate the effort needed to design with high speed signals, validate the I/O circuits to make
sure they work properly, create testing methods for the finished units, etc.
The expertise required to create software drivers, BIOS customisation, and API
code for the on-board I/O is also removed for easy integration.
EPU modules are almost obsolescence proof. The industry standard form factor means it's really easy to migrate to an EPU with a newer CPU module, but keep your existing I/O configuration and connectors for drop-in compatibility. This is combined with VersaLogic's standard 5-year availability guarantee and Product Life Extension programs for almost completely future-proof technology solutions.
Have a look at the EPU Product Overview to find out more.
If you think one of VersaLogic's rugged, off-the-shelf EPU embedded computer models might be a good fit for your application please give one of our experienced engineers to discuss your requirements.

Blood Donation and Blood Collection Systems using Single Board Computers
Author - Laura
Last week was National Blood Week 2015, which aimed to significantly increase the number of blood donors around the UK. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has revealed that 40% fewer new blood donors came forward across England and North Wales last year to give blood compared to this time a decade ago.
So last night, along with my blood donor buddy Toni, I went along to the session at Swindon Town Football Club and donated a full pint of the good stuff. Apparently my lovely B Positive blood is in demand as it’s quite rare. Only 9% of the UK donor population has this group, so it’s really important to keep donating whenever I can; at least 3 times a year.
The wonderful people at NHS Blood and Transplant collect 1.8 million units of blood each year from over 23,000 blood donation sessions across England and North Wales. Blood donation is a fairly simple process. Once the donor carer has done the relevant checks, and the needle is inserted, blood is collected in a bag out of sight. An agitator scale constantly wiggles, weighs and measures your donation and stops automatically when your donation is complete. A pint of blood normally takes about 7-8 minutes to collect. Easy peasy.
But the technology behind blood collection isn’t quite as straightforward…
VersaLogic Computers Keep Automated Blood Collection System Flowing
Automated blood collection systems are used to collect a combination of red blood cells, platelets, and plasma from donors. These computerised systems minimise operator intervention, integrate key functions, and provide important data at a moment's notice, thereby enhancing the efficiency of blood centre operations.
At the heart of one of the most widely used automated blood collection systems in the USA are two VersaLogic Single Board Computers (SBCs). The system relies on one VersaLogic board to perform control functions, while the other board is used as a safety computer. The state-of-the-art system uses cell separators that allow for the division of the various blood components in a high-speed centrifugal field while the device is still connected to the donor.
This process allows collection of any combination of red blood cells, platelets, and plasma while returning unneeded components to the donor, thereby allowing more frequent donations. The high reliability and long-term availability of VersaLogic SBCs were key elements in the selection of the VersaLogic solution. In addition, VersaLogic accommodated customisation requests that allowed communication between the CPU board, multiple peripherals, and the manufacturer’s I/O platform.
Donated blood is a lifeline for many people needing long-term treatments, not just in emergencies. Your blood's main components: red cells, plasma and platelets are vital for many different uses.
More donors are needed. You won't miss it when you give it; but patients could miss it if you don't.
If you've never donated before, or if you have but it's been a while, you can register at blood.co.uk and book your first appointment online.
Have a great weekend!

PCIe/104 OneBank - What's It All About?
The PC/104 Consortium has announced the latest version of the PCI/104-Express and PCIe/104 Specification which offers a new option called OneBank.
The PCIe/104 OneBank uses a smaller bus connector which is compatible to the full size PCIe/104 connector currently in use. It allows designers to stack boards using a complementary format, freeing up valuable space for additional components with the removal of the PCI bus from the PCB.
The OneBank connector has evolved from the standard PCIe/104 connector with the removal of two of the three "banks", resulting in a 52-pin connector as opposed to the full-size 156-pin connector. The OneBank connector will plug straight into bank 1 of the standard PCIe/104 connector. The signals of the OneBank are the same as found on the first bank of the standard PCIe/104 bus, making them plug-in compatible.
As with all of the stackable buses adopted by the PC/104 Consortium, the PCIe/104 OneBank connector can be combined with PC/104, EPIC, and EBX form factors, as well as a number of other form factors not supported by the Consortium, providing easy and inexpensive I/O expansion.
VersaLogic has recently introduced the Bengal — a rugged new PCIe/104 Single Board Computer (SBC). Based on Intel's highly anticipated “Bay Trail” System-on-Chip (SoC), Bengal combines high performance, low power consumption, enhanced security and small size for an unbeatable combination in most applications.
Designed and tested for industrial temperature (-40° to +85°C) operation the Bengal meets MIL-STD-202G specifications to withstand high impact and vibration, and is covered by VersaLogic's 5-year product warranty and 5+ year availability guarantee.
