First Public Demonstration of a SOSA-Aligned 100GbE VPX Switch

As you may have seen recently on social media and myriad industry news sites there was some very exciting technology demonstrated at the Tri-Service Open Architecture Interoperability Demonstration (TSOA-ID) on January 29 at Georgia Tech Research Institute.

TSOA-ID was the first time the three branches of United States Armed Services (Army, Navy and Air Force) were brought together with standards organisations including HOST, SOSA, CMOSS and VITA working alongside leading industry partners like Annapolis Micro Systems and Leonardo DRS to demonstrate the ease of interoperability of rugged embedded hardware and software modules.

TSOA-ID featured the very first public demonstration of a SOSA™-aligned 100Gb Ethernet-capable VPX switch and processing board. The next-generation WILDSTAR™ 100GbE 6E10 6U OpenVPX Switch and 6XB2 6U OpenVPX FPGA module from our partners at Annapolis featured in a live conformance and interoperability demo running within a US Air Force chassis.

Alongside the 100GbE demo, Annapolis also showcased the SOSA-aligned WILDSTAR 6XBU 6U OpenVPX FPGA Processing Board, which offers ultra-wide bandwidth digitisation and processing in a single 6U VPX board. It also delivers remarkable instantaneous bandwidth: 32 GHz receive and 24 GHz transmit.

Annapolis high-performance products can be used in a wide range of applications, including advanced HPC, ISR, and multi-function EW applications, such as phased array radar, cybersecurity network processing, DRFM, beamforming, sensor processing, wireless communication, and radar signal processing.

PCIe Board with Intel (Altera) Arria 10 GX FPGA Machine Learning Demonstration

BittWare took part in Super Computing 2016 last week, and used the event to showcase their must-see FPGA demos in network packet processing (NPP) and high-performance computing (HPC). If you were at the show you will also have seen BittWare's wide range of the latest Intel (formerly Altera) and Xilinx FPGA-based boards on display.

One of the demonstrations featured BittWare’s A10PL4 board, using Intel’s deep learning IP core loaded on the Arria 10 FPGA.

The A10PL4 from BittWare is an Altera Arria 10 FPGA PCIe board offering plenty of high speed serial I/O interfaces and debug support. Two QSFP cages are available, both connected to the Arria 10 FPGA removing latency in the external PHYs. The A10PL4 supports up to 32GB of DDR4 as well as flash memory with factory default and support for multiple FPGA images.

Machine Learning

'Machine Learning' is based on the development of computer programs that can learn and create their own rules. In deep learning, a task can be learned by the machine from a vast amount of data, either in supervised or unsupervised manner.

With the Deep Learning IP customers can leverage Intel Caffe in the Data Analytics Acceleration Library (DAAL) and Intel MKL-DNN to build AlexNet- or GoogleNet-like topologies without requiring a recompilation of the FPGA.

Accelerating machine learning applications like these are an excellent fit for FPGAs and OpenCL. Up to 16 A10PL4s can be combined inside a 4U server for a total of 18M logic elements and 512 GBytes of DDR4 memory.

BAE Systems Rugged Processor Unit Demo at DSEi 2011

Sarsen Technology will be exhibiting again at Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEi) in 2011. DSEi will be held from 13th - 16th September, 2011 in London at ExCeL. DSEi provides a unique platform to view the latest equipment and systems from the world’s defence and security industry. DSEi provides an opportunity for companies of all sizes to develop international relationships and generate new business opportunities.

We will have two working demos on our stand this year. A BittWare VPX Rapid Development Platform which is a development environment for 3U VPX Systems and a BAE Systems Rugged Processor Unit. The BAE Systems Rugged Processor Unit uses two VersaLogic Leopard PC/104-Plus Intel Core 2 Duo processor Single Board Computers. The Rugged Processor Unit operates in extreme temperatures, arid, humid, and wet climates and where shock/vibrations are commonplace. Certified to Mil Std 810F, you can be confident that the RPU will deliver the Size Weight and Performance (SWaP) you need.

You will find Sarsen Technology on stand S4-102 and details can be found on the www.dsei.co.uk web site. We look forward to seeing you there.
